Program Overview:
Missouri State University offers a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary program in gerontology leading to a Bachelor of Science degree or an undergraduate minor. The Gerontology Program has been recognized as a Program of Merit since 1999. The program is designed to provide students with both academic knowledge and applied experience. Students are provided with extensive information on the aging process from the biological, psychological and sociological perspectives. Additional course work introduces students to issues in aging concerning policy; gender; family relations; communication; dying, death and bereavement; health and wellness; diversity; and research. Students majoring in gerontology complete a practicum (field) placement (270-540 clock hours depending on prior work experience) working with older adutls in an approved community setting. The program links academic training with professional development, and prepares majors for career placement and/or the pursuit of a graduate degree.
